Worthing County Local Committee gives go-ahead to Worthing parking zone extensions

by Press Officer on 14 July, 2011

A proposal to extend Worthing’s Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), which was created in 1996, has been given the go-ahead by Worthing County Local Committee.

The proposal was contained in a report drawn up for the Committee by County Hall highways experts.

The report said: “In recent years a number of concerns from residents in unrestricted roads on the periphery of the CPZ have been received.

“These relate mainly to the increase in all day parking by non-residents, who are seemingly unable or unwilling to use the off-street car parks in the town centre or at the hospital.

“This has reduced the availability of parking for residents, affected access, reduced visibility and has been detrimental to road safety.”

The Committee has also given the go-ahead to formally advertise a number of minor amendments in the existing CPZ.

“These are designed to improve the effectiveness and operation of the CPZ, make it fully enforceable under civil law and improve the opportunities for overnight parking,” said the report.

Bob Smytherman, Committee Chairman, said: “The proposals were drawn up in response to issues raised by various sources, including local residents, traders and businesses. Officers and County Councillors have also formed a productive dialogue with the Chamber of Commerce.

“We shall now be monitoring the impact of CPZ, following the implantation of the extension.”
