Worthing Area Heritage Open Days

by Press Officer on 1 September, 2011

Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September 2011

Worthing is hosting thirty one events as part of National Heritage Open Days for the first time.

Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Heritage Open Days also include tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture.

Over the four days (Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September 2011) there will thirty one events taking place across the Worthing area. Some of the venues opening up will be The Pigeon Memorial, The  Old Toll Gate at Long Furlong in Clapham and St Mary’s Farmhouse in Durrington.

Martin Snow, Worthing Area Heritage Open Days Organiser, says:

”The open days in Worthing are going to be quite an insight into some of the area’s unique treasures. Members of the public interested in local history and experiencing buildings and monuments not normally open for visiting will be treated to some stunning and equally interesting sights. We’re really delighted to be able to offer such a varied programme of events across the area from tours of historical homes to guided walks through familiar passageways. There really is something for everyone.
The best thing about the four days is that entry to all of our special places is absolutely free.

About Heritage Open Days

1                    Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

2                    Heritage Open Days also include tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture.

3                    Organised by volunteers – usually property owners or managers – for local people, Heritage Open Days are England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event. Last year the event attracted around one million visitors.

4                    English Heritage gives central co-ordination and a national voice to the event.

5                    Heritage Open Days provide visitors with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy these sometimes hidden, often curious and always interesting places in English cities, towns and villages – and completely free of charge.

6                    Heritage Open Days were established in 1994 as England’s contribution to European Heritage Days, in which 49 countries now participate. In the UK, four other schemes open up places in September: Open House London, Doors Open Days in Scotland, Open Doors Days in Wales and European Heritage Days in Northern Ireland.
