Leader:  No longer improved, safe or clean and green
It wasn’t that long ago Worthing’s Tories changed their Cabinet Members titles and portfolios to more fluffier descriptions:   Cabinet Member for Improved Customer Services Cabinet Member for Health, Safety & Wellbeing Cabinet Member for a Clean & Green Environment   At the beginning of August this year they had a change of heart and simplified some of the titles:   Improved Customer Services became Customer Services – no longer improved Health, Safety & Wellbeing became just Health & Wellbeing – no longer safe A Clean & Green Environment became simply Environment – no longer clean and green   We wondered whether this was an outbreak of honesty about the Worthing Tories performance so far this year or perhaps honesty about the Cabinet Members’ understanding of their own portfolios. Admittedly we at times struggled to understand what areas were covered by each portfolio – the swimming pool was once in Improved Customer Services but was moved to a Clean & Green Environment. Was the Cabinet Member for Improved Customer Services less than keen?    Have the Tories finally admitted that customer services have not improved by moving housing advice from Worthing to Shoreham and not improved by public consultation remaining a last minute thought if at all?   Have the Tories realised their suggestion in the recent budget consultation to reduce seafront lighting can hardly enhance a feeling of safety?   And as for clean and green another suggestion in the same budget consultation is for parks to be sold for housing – no longer Broadwater Green perhaps but Broadwater Private Estate?   Worthing Lib Dems are still committed to improved customer services, a safe town and to a clean and green environment. That is why we are working with Worthing’s residents to make those improvments, to make the town more safe and to bring about a cleaner and greener environment.  We haven’t had a change of heart unlike apparently the Tories.

NEWS FROM THE PAST WEEK
DIY ROAD REPAIRS IN SHERIDAN ROAD
Thursday 8th September – The Big Society took on a new meaning this week when a resident decided to do his/her own road repairs in Sheridan Road, Broadwater. Fed up with potholes being marked by West Sussex County Council for weeks but no sign of any repair taking place a resident took the initiative and filled the potholes with concrete. Lack of action on road repairs is a county-wide problem which is why Lib Dem Broadwater County Councillor Alan Rice has taken up the matter with the Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways. Worthing Liberal Democrats are also fed up with the delays that are occuring everywhere not just with West Sussex but also with Worthing Borough Council. How much longer do residents have to wait before the new Durrington Community Centre is opened? Alan Rice said: “You have to admire the resident’s initiative and it is not surprising with the lack of action from our two Tory councils.  We need answers why there are so many delays in so many areas at the moment – lack of road repairs are just a highly visible tip of the iceberg. I am determined to get those answers and get some movement.”
MAYOR AND HARE AT EDWARDIAN TEA PARTY
Friday 9th September – Worthing’s Mayor Ann Barlow and local historian Chris Hare will be at the Edwardian Tea Party on Wednesday organised by Lib Dem Central Ward Councillor David Chapman. The tea party is to be held in support of the restoration of the war memorial outside St Pauls Church and Chris Hare will give a talk on its history. The memorial acknowleges those Worthing men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War. It has fallen into a sorry state. It is dirty and neglected, suffering from weathering, lichen encroachment and skateboarders. David has, with the support of the Combined Ex-Serviceman’s Association and the St Paul’s Trustees, agreed to undertake a project to have the Memorial restored and refurbished in the next few months. It is estimated it will cost in the region of £2,000 for the work and further funds are needed to ensure the Memorial is cleaned regularly over the next few years. The Edwardian Tea Party is to be held at the St Paul’s Centre on the afternoon of Wednesday September 14th from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Tickets are £6.00.  Once the work is complete, it is hoped to have a re-dedication ceremony for the Memorial. For information about the Edwardian Tea Party please contact David on 01903 237474 or e-mail david.chapman@worthing.gov.uk.
